Bougies naturelles et non toxiques : quels sont les critères ?

Natural and non-toxic candles: what are the criteria?

Primarily used to create a harmonious and relaxing atmosphere in your home, scented candles, when not made from natural ingredients, are not without risk.

Why should we favor natural and non-toxic candles?

When they are not of natural origin, candles can pollute the air and be toxic to both your health and the environment. More specifically, non-natural candles have wicks, fragrances, and waxes made from chemical and toxic ingredients, whether the candles are lit or unlit. For cost reasons, most non-natural candles are made from paraffin wax, a petroleum derivative. When heated, paraffin releases numerous toxic components such as benzene, acetone, and toluene. These are also carcinogens. Even when unlit, scented, non-natural candles release benzene, which also triggers toxic reactions. Furthermore, when paraffin wax burns and is mixed with non-natural fragrances, it releases a significant amount of soot. Soot, however, is a collection of toxic particles that can remain in the air for a long time. As such, it can be harmful to both our health and the environment. Furthermore, since petroleum is not a renewable resource, paraffin wax is not an eco-friendly product either. As for the non-natural fragrances and dyes found in conventional candles, their scent releases components such as formaldehyde and limonene. These substances can cause migraines, allergies, and respiratory infections. Finally, candles made with metal-core wicks release heavy metal particles, such as lead, throughout their burning time. Therefore, there are many reasons why it is wise to choose natural and non-toxic candles.

Finding natural and non-toxic candles for your home: what criteria should you use?

First, it's important to know that a scented, natural, and non-toxic candle is made from 100% plant-based and natural waxes, such as rapeseed wax, coconut wax, palm wax, and beeswax. However, Aimée de Mars has chosen not to use palm wax or beeswax. Indeed, the production of these types of waxes involves the overexploitation of nature. The second criterion that guarantees a candle is natural and non-toxic is its fragrance. Choosing fragrances of natural origin ensures that their scents do not contain phthalates or CMR substances (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, and Toxic to Reproduction). The third criterion for buying a candle is its container. We recommend choosing a container made from sustainable materials, such as glass. The wick is another important factor when choosing your scented candle, as it determines whether your candle burns evenly and whether it releases toxic components. Specifically, to prevent a candle from releasing heavy metals, avoid wicks with a metal base and opt for plant-based wicks, such as those made from natural cotton flower fiber or natural paper. Finally, the candle's manufacturing method is also essential. Handcrafted candles made in France, in particular, guarantee ethical production, craftsmanship, and quality.
